Get Directions Using a Bluetooth GPS Receiver
If you own a mobile device that is Bluetooth-enabled, you can turn this device into a fully functional portable navigation system by using a Bluetooth GPS receiver. Your device can then access the receiver wirelessly to determine your location. With the right navigation software, you can receive turn-by-turn voice and visual prompts on your phone, PDA, or laptop.
A Bluetooth GPS receiver is a small box, often no larger than an MP3 player, that can be placed anywhere that has a clear view of the sky. The receiver automatically connects wirelessly to your mobile device. Some receivers include navigation software, but most can be used just as easily with software like Google maps or Bing maps. To use your device with the receiver, you can put it wherever you have the best visibility and screen access.
You should note that the maps included with any GPS system require a great deal of memory. If you are planning to use the receiver with a PDA, you should consider looking for one that offers a storage card for an expansion slot to store the maps. Otherwise, you will probably want to invest in a large memory card.
When comparing receivers, be sure to look at battery life and included accessories.
With a price tag of under $100, a Bluetooth GPS receiver is a small investment, and could be a great gift for anyone with a Bluetooth-enabled device that does not have GPS functionality. In fact, at this low price you might consider using a receiver instead of paying a monthly fee for the service built into your device.
