Office Survival Kits: Should The Unthinkable Happen
Even if you have never been in the aftermath of a earthquake, tornado or hurricane, you know that these disasters and others happen frequently. All to frequently for most people’s comfort. Most people have some type of emergency supplies in their home should the unthinkable happen and that is good. However, what about your office or place where you work? Do you have some type of office survival kit in case an emergency happens at work?
The truth is that most people spend 8 to 10 hours or more at the place where they work. This means that the chances are good should a disaster occur you may be at work rather than at home. Yet most businesses have no emergency office survival kits to help their employees ride out an emergency until help arrives and they should. There are office kits designed for the larger businesses that include shelter, food and a light source should you need it. Such kits should be on the premises of every business.
If you are an employer you owe to your employees to provide some kind of protection should disaster hit at your business. Office kits designed for survival provide just that kind of protection. While you can’t stop a tornado, flood or other disaster from occurring you can certainly see to it that as many people survive as possible if such an occurrence happens.
If you are an employee talk to your management team and explain how important it is to have some type of disaster plan in place and make sure that they understand that office survival kits are a necessity in today’s world.
What To Do If Your Employer Doesn’t See The Need For An Office Survival Kit?
What happens if your employer really doesn’t see a need to have an office kit available in case of an emergency? Well, there are a couple of things you can do in that case. You can either just let the matter drop and hope for the best or you can take steps to see that you and your co-workers are protected.
Talk to your co-workers and see if they will be willing to go in on an office emergency kit. Explain to them that studies show it takes up to 72 hours for rescue workers to get organized in the event of a disaster and having an office kit can mean the difference between surviving or not for that period of time until help can arrive. Remember, in most cases your co workers want to survive too. However, if they are reluctant or think you are over reacting then there is nothing wrong with you getting your own survival kit and keep it in your office.
Hardly a month goes by where you don’t hear on the news of some people trapped in an office, a store or other place of work when a disaster occurs. While some times, these people were prepared for a disaster most times they weren’t and their survival was more to luck than forethought. If you don’t want to leave your chances of surviving an emergency to fate, then perhaps an office survival kit is more important than you think.
