There are currently 24 operational satellites in the constellation of GPS satellites orbiting the earth with a orbital radius of about 16,000 miles (the center of the earth). The orbits of the satellites are spaced in six orbital planes (the plane of the orbit is the surface level formed by the path traced by the orbit of the satellite – is almost circular). The six orbital planes are separated by an angle of 60 degrees. Refer to the appears below the constellation. Four to six satellites occupy an orbital plane.
In addition to the 24 operational satellites, there are currently six satellites remain in orbit as spares if one of 24 operational satellites malfunction. The six satellites are kept operational reserve for users to receive signals from them only 24 satellites. However, the U.S. government does not guarantee availability at any time.
Remember that GPS satellites are being implemented since 1974. Satellites, like everything else has a limited lifespan. GPS satellites are designed to provide life ~ 8 years. New satellites are launched into space at regular intervals to compensate for the satellites that have lived their entire lives.
When satellites launched in space, which headings are inserted in pre-calculated their orbital planes. Estimates previously known only to a GPS receiver located land anywhere, anytime, can receive signals from at least four satellites.
